Replacing your old light fixtures with updated, state-of-the-art lighting is one of the best business decisions you can make. When you upgrade your retail outlet with low cost energy efficient solutions, you’ll not only save money, but also you’ll find help is available to assist in paying for the changes.
Because of the spotlight on the corporate use of natural resources and concern about environmental protection, reducing the volume of electricity needed for your retail lighting store will both be reflected in your bottom line and appreciated by your community and government.
Update Your Old Fluorescent Fixtures
You can replace your old fluorescent lights with new, updated and attractive fixtures that will reduce your electricity bill, be quieter and help promote your business.
- Compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) costs more initially, but your monthly savings on electricity will soon pay for the new fixtures and then start saving you money. They are energy-efficient and run on one-third of the electricity and emit one-quarter of the heat, and the lights themselves last ten times longer.
- For even greater savings, use light emitting diode (LED) lights, which also cost more, but last ten times longer than CFL lights and ten times longer than incandescent lights, and use a shocking one-thirtieth of the electricity of incandescent lights! LED lights will generate the greatest savings on electricity.
- Don’t forget about the benefits and savings cost of natural lighting. With skylights and the strategic use of windows, you can create a pleasing environment that encourages shoppers to visit and to stay longer. Retail sales increased 40% for a chain retailer who converted to natural lighting wherever possible throughout 108 of its stores according to a recent study.
You Can Receive a Tax Deduction for Becoming Energy Efficient
To show the degree to which our country is committed to reducing the use of our natural resources, both the state governments and the federal government are offering incentives for companies to ‘go green.’
1. The State Tax Credit
To take advantage of the state tax rebate in Indiana, you will have to act fast as the terms of this rebate may not be renewed and they expire at the end of 2013. You can deduct the cost of switching to LED lighting, providing you change enough of the lighting to reduce your store’s use of electricity by 25%.
2. The Federal Tax Credit
The federal tax credit will be in force until 2016, and will give you an opportunity to buy many different energy-savings products such as a solar energy system or a natural gas furnace, and will give you a tax credit for 30% of the cost up to $1500 per year. You can stretch out your purchases and take advantage of this savings each year until 2016.
3. Another Rebate Program
If your power source is Duke Energy, one of the biggest suppliers of energy in Indiana, check into their rebate program. In order to encourage customers to reduce their use of energy, Duke has been offsetting some of the costs when their customers upgrade their technology. If you are a Duke customer, check into this program and arrange for an inspection of the changes you are making.
Let Your Customers Know about Your Environmental Concerns
You will garner good will from the community if you make it known that you have made environmentally friendly changes to your retail outlet. People care.
